phillips.jpgXavier Phillips was born in Paris and started the cello at 6 with Jacqueline Heuclin.
He was awarded a First Prize in 1989 in chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in Philippe Muller's class.
He then undertook further study with Paul Tortelier and Mstislav Rostropovitch.
He has appeared in numerous capital cities of Europe both as soloist and in chamber music: Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, London, Hamburg, Paris and he has played with some of the most prestigious orchestras like the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National of France, the Berliner Symphoniker, the Houston Symphony, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Filarmonica della Scala invited by Riccardo Muti and many other institutions under very great conductors such as as Christoph Eschenbach, George Prêtre, Vladimir Fedosseiev, Juan Lopez-Cobos, Eliahu Inbal.
After his outstanding debut at the Orchestre de Paris and at the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva, his career is right now going full speed thanks to the support of numerous prestigious musicians among which Mstislav Rostropovitch, Christoph Eschenbach, Riccardo Muti or James Conlon.
During season 2002/03 he made his debut in subscription concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC and one month later at the New York Philharmonic both under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovitch but also in Europe at the Maggio Fiorentino under the direction of Daniel Oren.
Last season he got series of triumphs performing notably the Dvorak Cello Concerto at the Bologna Opera under the baton of James Conlon, at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées with the Orchestre National de France under Ion Marin and in Lille four consecutive nights with the Orchestre National de Lille under Friedemann Layer.
Xavier Phillips has made his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in April 2004 for three subscription concerts where he played the Tchaïkovsky's Rococo Variations under the direction of Rostropovitch.
Xavier Phillips has been chosen by 'Accenture', ex Andersen Consulting Foundation, whose President is Michel Carlier, as their 'Godson', a distinction which he is sharing only with the famous Trio Wanderer. From now on Xavier Phillips will benefit from the formidable protection and invaluable support of the Foundation throughout the World via their 48 companies.
After being awarded the 'Grand Prix du Disque' for his first recording dedicated to Alberic Magnard's chamber music (Auvidis Valois), Xavier Phillips received a 'Choc de la Musique' for the recording of Schnittke, Chostakovitch and Prokof'ev Sonatas with the Turkish pianist Hüseyin Sermet (Harmonia Mundi).
His last recording (the first with Orchestra) with the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie including the Lalo Concerto has been issued by EMI - Classics and immediately got also the distinction of 'Choc' by the famous magazine 'Le Monde de la Musique.
Xavier Phillips plays Matteo Gofriller's cello dated 1710 thanks to a sponsor, the coffee brand 'Blue de Brazil'.
