STRESA EARLab 2008 – Workshop of musical invention

 

Open to composers and musicians of all nationalities, under the age of 35 years (in the year 2007). Teacher will be Luca Francesconi.
The Workshop will be made up of two parts. The first part consists of a three-days meeting in Bergen (Norway) from June 16 to June 18, 2008; the second part will take place in Stresa (Italy) from August 26 to September 4, 2008.
Lessons in Stresa will take place every day from about 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m., both individually and in groups.
During the first part in Bergen and from August 30, 2008 in Stresa, students of the Workshop will be constantly collaborating with
BIT20 Ensemble of Bergen (Norway) and from September 2 with the violinist Irvine Arditti.
Selected composers will be asked to compose new works to be finished during STRESA EARLab under Luca Francesconi’s supervision. One of these must be written for violin and ensemble.
A maximum of six participating students and ten listeners will be admitted. In order to be selected the candidates must submit two free-choice compositions, with relative recordings.
A composition dedicated to string instruments would be appreciated.

All the compositions elaborated during STRESA EARlab will be performed during the official planning of Stresa Festival.
Composers will work on the following indicative orchestration:

  • flute/piccolo
  • clarinet/bass clarinet
  • oboe/english horn
  • bassoon
  • horn
  • percussions
  • piano
  • 2 violins
  • viola
  • cello
  • double bass

 

In order to be selected the scores must be sent by April 20, 2008, along with the following information:

  • first name and last name
  • place and date of birth
  • nationality
  • two recent photographs
  • home address, phone numbers and e-mail address
  • Italian or English curriculum vitae

It is strongly advised to submit video and audio material as evidence of the candidates’ experience.
Applications will be selected by the Commission whose verdict will be notified to the students by May 5, 2008.
The students’ courses are free.
Bergen
's organization will take care of travelling and accommodation expenses in Bergen (Norway).
Travelling and accommodation expenses
in Stresa will be paid by the pupils.
Special conditions for accommodation in Stresa are foreseen.
