After his diploma at the Vicenza Conservatory of Music, Walter Testolin started working on the repertory of Renaissance and Baroque music. He has sung with some of the most authoritative specialists in 17th–18th century music (S. Kuijken, A. Curtis, A. Lawrence-King, D. Fasolis, B. Kuijken, M. Radulescu, O. Dantone, F. Bonizzoni). His interest in contemporary compositions has also taken him into numerous first performances of theatrical and chamber music works. He was choir master for the world première of Michael Nyman’s Mosé in Rome in 2001 and in October 2008 he conducted the Mass for Six Voices and Three Bayans commissioned by the Milan Laboratorio per la Musica Contemporanea nella Liturgia [Workshop for Contemporary Liturgical Music] from six representative European composers.
Walter Testolin has participated in more than a hundred recordings, including the complete Madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi, and the complete works of Heinrich Schütz. He records frequently for European radio and television. In 2007 he worked with the Flemish ensemble, La Petite Bande, conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken, accompanying them on their tour and in the recording of Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine.
A keen scholar of Josquin Desprez’ work, and one of its most authentic and significant performers, he was the founder of De labyrintho, a vocal ensemble which, under his direction, has become one of the principal European Renaissance music groups. He runs courses, conferences and master classes at various well-known institutions in Italy and elsewhere, and is consultant to the editorial manager of the New Josquin Edition, a new critique of Josquin Desprez’ music, published by the Royal Dutch Institute for Music Studies.
