Serguey Murzaev studied at the Cheliabinsk University and at the Music Acedemy in Moscow with Pyotr Skusnichenko. He then won several international singing competitions.
Since 1991 he has been soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and permanent guest at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Sergey Murzaev is well known for his performances of the major Verdi baryton roles and of the Russian repertoire, having appeared in Otello, Un ballo in maschera, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Evgheny Onegin and Boris Godunov.
Since 2001, after his debut at the Verdi Festival, Parma in Un ballo in maschera conducted by Valery Gergiev, he is regularly invited by the major European Opera Houses. In 2002 he made his Metropolitan Opera debut with War and Peace and his debut at Teatro alla Scala in Iolantha under the baton of Yuri Temirkanov.
With Gianandrea Noseda has recorded the roles of Lancillotto in Francesca da Rimini and of The Duke in The Miserly Knight by Serge Rachmaninoff for Chandos label.
