LONDON-BRASSLondon Brass was formed in 1986, for the purpose of promoting the virtuosity and sonority of classical chamber brass music. Many of the founder members already had significant experience in this field of performance through working with the Philip Jones BE and so the ensemble was very quick in making its way forward, giving concerts and producing cutting edge recordings.
The ensemble works in many formats. It is primarily known around the world as a tentet, but also performs as a quintet which was how initially Philip Jones started his groundbreaking group.
London Brass has gone from strength to strength and, since its formation, has produced recordings and concerts ranging in repertoire from the 16th century Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli through to Freddie Mercury and Sir Harrison Birtwistle. Its appearances have also been equally varied, and have included venues such as the Lincoln Centre in New York, a Norwegian metal furnace works and even the shade of a mountain tree in the Italian Dolomites!
Recent engagements include the Bath International Music Festival and Durham International Brass Festival, as well as tours to Portugal, Spain, Holland and Germany. In 2010, London Brass returned to the Bbc Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, London performing in the Bbc Commission and world première of Stephen Montague’s Wilful Chant.
As Ensemble in Residence at the Royal College of Music, London, educational projects remain a priority for the ensemble presenting master-classes and workshops both at home and abroad. London Brass continues to be in demand for high profile ceremonial occasions too having broadcast live around the globe from St Paul’s Cathedral, during H.M. the Queen’s 2002 Jubilee Celebration Service, and the Papal Mass from Westminster Cathedral during the Pope’s visit to the Uk in 2010.
Their most recent Cd, Surprise, has become one of the group’s most successful albums.
They performed at Stresa Festival in 1995 and 2005.
