lungu.jpgIrina Lungu was born in Moldova in 1980 and studied piano, chorus conducting as well as singing with Podkopaev at the State Conservatory in Voronezh (Russia). In this city she made her first debuts as Leïla (Les pecheurs des perles), Marfa (The Tzar’s bride), Desdemona (Otello). Since 2003 she was a member of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala di Milano under the guidance of soprano Leyla Gencer.
She has won the following contests: “Bella Voce” in Moscow, “Competizione dell’Opera” in Dresden, “Elena Obraztsova” in St. Petersburg, “Tchaikovsky” in Moscow, “Maria Callas” in Athens, “Montserrat Caballè” in Andorra, “Belvedere” in Wien, “Voci Verdiane” in Busseto and “Operalia” in Los Angeles.
She has performed and still performs actively in Russia, Germany, Croatia, Switzerland and Italy at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in St. Petersburg, in Koln with the Kolner Philarmoniker, in Moscow with the Moscow Virtuosi conducted by Vladimir Spivakov, at the Luzern Festival and with the Fondazione Toscanini in Bologna.
Among her recent engagements: the title role in Donizetti’s Parisina at Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo, Bianca in Donizetti’s Ugo, conte di Parigi at Teatro Bellini in Catania, Donizetti’s Il diluvio universale at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London (and a recording with Opera Rara), Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta under Vladimir Fedoseev in Lisbon, Verona and Lugano, a Recital at the Musashino Cultural Foundation in Tokyo, her debut as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte in Lisbon directed by Mario Martone, her French debut as Liù in Turandot at the Opéra de Toulon, La traviata at the Rome Opera directed by Franco Zeffirelli and directed by Gianluigi Gelmetti as well as the Staatstheater Stuttgart, in Parma and at the Korea Opera Group in Seoul directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi, her debut in Luisa Miller for the 2007 Verdi Festival at Teatro Regio in Parma.
At La Scala in Milan she sang Anais in Moïse et Pharaon under Riccardo Muti directed by Luca Ronconi, Oksana in Tchaikovsky’s Cerevicki, the title role in Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna and Violetta in La traviata under Lorin Maazel.
