atrium-quartet.jpgThe Atrium String Quartet rose to international prominence in April 2003 when they won the First Prize and the Audience Prize in the London International String Quartet Competition which was held at the prestigious Wigmore Hall, when they made their debut on BBC Radio 3 with a performance of the 5th String Quartet of Shostakovich.
As part of their prize the Atrium String Quartet was invited to record for Emi Classics and the Cd of works by Mozart (K 421 in D minor), Tchaikovsky (Opus 30 in Eb minor) and Shostakovich (Opus 108 in F# minor) was released later in the same year to high critical acclaim.
The Quartet was founded in the autumn of 2000 in the St. Petersburg Conservatoire under the inspiration of Professor Joseph Levinson, cellist of the celebrated Taneyev Quartet.
The first serious success came in September 2001 in the 6th International Competition of String Quartets by Shostakovich held in Moscow, when they won Second Prize. In April 2002 in the 3rd International String Quartet Competition in Cremona (Italy) they won Second Prize. Following this success they gave concerts in Germany and Austria, during which time they received coaching from members of the Alban Berg Quartet and from Eberhard Feltz in Berlin and Michael Estrin in St Petersburg. In November 2002 in the 3rd International Chamber Music Competition in Weimar (Germany) they won Second Prize (the First Prize was not awarded). Atrium Quartet realized the record of Quartets by Shostakovich and Debussy for Mdr (Mitteldeutscheradio) in Leipzig and also gave concerts in Australia.
In addition to offering the mainstream Classical repertoire and established Russian composers, the Atrium String Quartet promotes works by living Russian composers including those by Andrei Petrov and Yuri Falik, resulting in a recording of his 7th and 8th Quartets.
Since winning the London International String Quartet Competition, their international career has blossomed with concerts in Germany - performing in the Beethoven Festival, Schwetzingen Festival, Aix-en-Provence Festival in France, in Festivals in Italy, Kuhmo Festival in Finland, Orlando Festival in the Netherlands and concert tours in Switzerland and Ireland and in the United Kingdom in 2007 - 2008.
In 2007 the Quartet will perform in Germany, Italy, Spain, Ukraine and the Netherlands.
Since February 2006 Atrium Quartet has been resident at the Dutch String Quartet Academy where they have received training from Stefan Metz, founder and cellist of the Orlando Quartet.
