Why does Mozart’s Idomeneo struggle to enter the hearts of opera lovers? Is it because of the kind of music? I do not believe it to be so: the music of Idomeneo is the most sublime which Mozart has ever written. Is it due to the scarce interaction between the characters? I am certain it is not so, the drama ingredients lavish to the brim: the dramatic love between father and son, the contested love for a foreign woman, the raging jealousy of who lusts for power, the supernatural intervention of the gods who condition the destinies of man. Then could it be the presumed immobility of the story and the slowness with which events evolve? It seems to me that the motives of surprise and the unexpected dramatic turns such as the tempest, the song of the prisoners, the voice of the oracle of Neptune are present at the key moments of the story. So why does the Idomeneo stir up more respect than love? I believe the answer lies in our lack of familiarity with the Greek epic, with the heroes involved in the war. Little does it matter that the themes developed are such as we meet with every day and which we ought to face up to in our lives: the relationship with ourselves, with others and with divinity. What baffles, intimidates and irritates us is the niche where the opera Idomeneo is placed: it is the sphere of the “sublime”. And Mozart the prankster, the pleasure giver, the eternal bad guy shows us the “sublime” as what we should aspire to giving us the opera which, from his own, he has loved best.
