He who wants too much doesn’t catch anything!
This
common Italian proverb rich in popular wisdom is the synthesis, maybe a
little oversimplified, of Stravinsky’s The rake’s progress. The
uncontrollable urge of power, of richness, of success are the main
themes that characterize this masterpiece, letting aside feelings such
as love, respect or sharing. At the end of this journey there remains
solitude, the awareness of failure in life and the consequent mental
deterioration of the protagonist.
I am overwhelmed by the topical interest of this story; as all stories,
it has a strong symbolical value. I contrast the logics of general
indifference, of “all and now”, because I strongly believe in an
attitude of astonishment in front of beauty, of reciprocity in an
encounter and of joy in exchange. Is this an utopia?
