The opera of youth that lends itself to life, with first responsibilities and first disillusions.
La bohème represents the end of a period of life made up of light-mindedness and the beginning of mature age.
It somehow closes the nineteenth century (it has been written in 1895) and opens the twentieth, with its hopes, its questions and its news.
La bohème narrates how Mimì dies of tuberculosis in Rodolfo’s and in her friends’ arms; but what will happen to Rodolfo, Marcello, Schaunard, Colline e Musetta? 23 years later, in 1918, the new century was already marked by a bloodstained world war, which shall reveal that these hopes, these expectations were to be deluded. In 1918 Puccini presents his masterpiece Il trittico.
In Tabarro, the first of the three operas, the plot takes place in Paris as in Bohème, by the river Senne, and a group of girls cite the song of Mimì.
Could the characters of Tabarro be the same of Bohème, gotten older and disenchanted? Maybe it went exactly like this: in this case the “stagion dei fior” (“season of flowers”), evoked by Rodolfo and Mimì in Bohème’s III act, has not maintained its promises. It has lead to the unhealthy and malodorous boat described in Tabarro.
