De-CarolisRenowned around the world as one of the best interpreters of the main Rossini’s and Mozart’s roles, Natale De Carolis debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in the opening night of the 1987/8 season in Don Giovanni with Riccardo Muti (recorded for Emi). Important debuts followed in many renowned theatres and productions: in 1988, his U.S. debut at the Metropolitan Opera in the title role of Le nozze di Figaro; in 1991, his first performance at Sidney Opera in Don Giovanni, where he returned in 1994 as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. From then on, Natale De Carolis has enjoyed a brilliant career throughout Europe, the Americas, Israel and Australia, collaborating with important conductors and stage directors.
His career was marked by successful interpretations of Le nozze di Figaro (Figaro; Metropolitan Opera with James Levine; Zurich with Nikolaus Harnoncourt; Teatro alla Scala under the baton of Riccardo Muti; Teatro La Fenice di Venezia and Wiener Staatsoper), La Cenerentola (Don Magnifico; Carnegie Hall), Händel’s Rinaldo (Teatro La Fenice di Venezia and Teatro Real in Madrid), Mozart’s Requiem (Teatro La Fenice di Venezia), Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia (Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli), Don Giovanni (in the role of Leporello at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze with the conducting of Zubin Mehta, at the Metropolitan Opera with James Levine, and at the Wiener Staatsoper; in the title role in Frankfurt with Sylvain Cambreling conductor; in Sidney, Lisbon, Antibes, Glyndebourne, Tel Aviv and at the New National Theatre in Tokyo), Così fan tutte (Guglielmo; Teatro Comunale di Firenze with Zubin Mehta; Glyndebourne Festival; Sidney), Tancredi (Teatro Comunale di Bologna), L’occasione fa il ladro (Köln), L’elisir d’amore (Dulcamara) at the Wiener Staatsoper and at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo; the role of Belcore at the Covent Garden, Il barbiere di Siviglia (Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, staged by Hugo de Ana), Il matrimonio segreto (Conte Robinson; Bilbao), La gazza ladra (Fernando; Teatro La Fenice di Venezia), Il turco in Italia (Teatro San Carlo di Napoli), La Bohème (Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli).
Recent seasons’ highlights of Natale De Carolis include successful interpretations of Così fan tutte at Michigan Opera of Detroit, at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, at Salzburger Festspiele and at Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London, as well as the recent debut at Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin in L’elisir d’amore (Dottor Dulcamara), under the baton of Daniele Callegari. He has also recently portrayed Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola and Leporello in Don Giovanni at Teatro Massimo di Palermo; Schaunard in La Bohème at Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; Don Giovanni at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and in Stresa, conducted by Noseda; Manon, Don Giovanni, Werther and L’elisir d’amore at New National Theatre in Tokyo.
At Teatro Marruccino di Chieti he just sang as Selim in Il turco in Italia and, on December, 12, 2003 he took part in an evening gala dedicated to the famous singer Nazareno De Angelis, receiving on that occasion the prestigious Premio Nazareno De Angelis (First Edition).
In the 2004 season he was heard in Werther (Alberto) at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, as Conte d’Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro in Turin, as Ford (Falstaff) and De Siriex (Fedora) in Milan, as Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore at the Staatsoper Berlin, and in the role of Don Giovanni in Menorca. These were followed by Don Giovanni, in the role of Leporello, at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Luisa Miller on a Japan tour of Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, Il barbiere di Siviglia (Don Basilio) at the Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro, at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and at Teatro Comunale di Bologna. During 2007 season he has sung as Dottor Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore) at the Staatsoper Berlin , Alberto (Werther) at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and as Conte d’Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro in Menarca.
Among his recent engagements it is worth mentioning Ford in Falstaff at Teatro Regio di Torino, Così fan tutte (Alfonso) at Wiener Staatsoper, L’elisir d’amore at Berlin Staatsoper.
His future engagements include Ford Carmen and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, La Bohème at Teatro alla Scala and on a Japan tournée with the Turin Teatro Regio, Werther at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Così fan tutte (Alfonso) on a Japan tour with the Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala L’occasione fa il Ladro (Don Parmenione), Beijing, L’elisir d’amore (Dulcamara) Natale De Carolis made his professional debut in 1983 at Teatro Lirico Sperimentale of Spoleto «A. Belli» in the role of Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia. He returned in Spoleto to sing as Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore and the title roles of Don Pasquale and Le nozze di Figaro.
Natale De Carolis began his studies with Renato Guelfi and completed them with Maria Vittoria Romano. He was the first prize winner of the «Toti Dal Monte» Competition held by Treviso. In 2012 he will interpret the role of Don Alfonso in Così fan Tutte at Teatro Regio in Turin and the Staatsoper in Wien.
