regio.jpgThe Orchestra of the Teatro Regio descends from an orchestra founded at the end of  the nineteenth century by Arturo Toscanini, who was its permanent conductor and artistic director. Since 1967, it has been the permanent orchestra of the opera foundation  in Torino, engaged in the entire Opera and Ballet Season. The orchestra has played a major part in such successful productions as La damnation de Faust by Berlioz with Luca Ronconi’s staging (awarded the “Premio Abbiati” in 1992 by the national association of Italian music critics), La bohème by Puccini, realised in 1996 on the occasion of the centenary of the opera with Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni (broadcast live on television).
In recent seasons, the Orchestra of the Teatro Regio has also been a partner to important ballet companies, such as the unforgettable Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow and the Kirov Ballet of the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg. The orchestra is active in radio and television broadcasts, and in making recordings (the complete symphonies of Tchaikovsky with Vladimir Delman should be mentioned), and has been the guest of numerous festivals and foreign opera and concert halls. In October 2000, it performed Sly with José Carreras at the Acropolis and Zazà with Leo Nucci at the Opéra, while a year later it made an important  tour of France with performances in Paris, Toulouse, Toulon, and Lyon. In 2000, the orchestra was awarded the “Viotti d’Oro” International Prize by the Quartet Society of Vercelli.
In 1997 Hardy Classic produced a video (today also available on Dvd) of Rossini’s Elisabetta, regina d’Inghilterra, with Gabriele Ferro conducting and singers Lella Cuberli, Daniela Dessì and Rockwell Blake, and in 2003, the Dvd of the historical performance of Norma by Vincenzo Bellini, conducted by Giuseppe Patanè at the Theatre Antique d’Orange in July 1974 with Monsaerrat Caballé, Jon Vickers and Josephine Veasey. The Orchestra has also made a recording of opera arias with Angela Gheorghiu for Decca with John Mauceri conducting, and for Nuova Era  Il barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini and Don Pasquale by Donizetti with Bruno Campanella conducting.
