young2.jpgMichael Young initially studied conducting with Eno Koço at the University of Leeds where he was a prize-winning graduate for his outstanding contribution to music. Here he was director of the Leeds University Union Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and the LS2 Contemporary Ensemble, and inaugurated the Leeds University Union Symphony Chorus for the second of a series of charity concerts at the Leeds Town Hall in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Having completed postgraduate conducting studies at the Royal College of Music with Neil Thomson, from 2006 Michael will be the Paul Woodhouse Junior Fellow in Conducting at the RCM, through which he will be working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Michael has participated in master classes with Bernard Haitink and was selected to participate in the first LSO Discovery Master class with Sir Colin Davis. He has also assisted Bernard Haitink in London.
In September 2005 he conducted Purcell≠s Dido and Aeneas for the Woodhouse festival in Surrey. Michael was a finalist prizewinner in the Eighth Leeds Conductors≠ Competition, winning both the audience prize (Kenneth Tyghe Memorial Prize) and the sinfonia ViVA Associate Conductor Prize.
Michael is the first appointed associate conductor of sinfonia ViVA, is principal conductor of the Dorking Chamber Orchestra and guest conductor of the Dulwich Symphony Orchestra.
