vellardDominique Vellard has discovered his passion for renaissance polyphony, for the French masters of the XVII century and for Gregorian Chants in the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Versailles, where he had sung when he was a child. After having won several prizes at the Conservatoire of Paris, he has dedicated himself to deepen his knowledge of the repertoires that had fascinated him during his childhood. He has begun conducting the Ensemble Gilles Binchois since from its foundation in 1979, obtaining success thanks to his skill in creating an ideal bridge connecting musicians coming from different oral traditions (Aruna Saïram, Yann-Fañch Kemener, Noureddine Tahiri, Ken Zuckerman, Keyvan Chemirani) with the artists coming from contemporary written music (Jean-Pierre Leguay, Gilbert Amy).

In these last years, he has dedicated himself to composition as well: The seven words of Christ on the cross (April 2004), the masses Laudes Deo and Stabat Mater (2005), Miserere, Ovos omnes, Calligaverunt (2006). Since 1982, Dominique Vellard teaches at the Schola Cantorum of Basle.

He has assumed the Artistic direction of Rencontres Internationales de Musique Médiévale du Thoronet, since its onset in 1991 and of Festival Les Melanges de Printemps (Dijion) since 2003.
